BIMINI: I posted on this before, but it is disturbing that they're tearing up the island. I caught my first bonefish there this winter, and hopefully will get the chance again.

Fast Movers in the Sound

I went out on Long Island Sound today expecting nothing but bluefish. That's been the story so far this month. I did find some blues in the back of the Bays that chased crease flies and poppers. But the real story of the day turned out to be Bonito! I came across this erratic surface bust that always seemed to move just out of casting range. Finally, I got a popper in the mix, and was stunned to see and hear my reel start to scream. The school of six-pounders stuck around chasing bait in 14-feet of water for about a half hour. Yeeeehaaaah!

STRIPED BASS: As the water cools, striped bass fishing will heat up. I can't wait for the fall run to start here in earnest.

MORE CHARITY: Every year the magazine I work for gets a project boat for the season. This year, the boat company is donating our boat to a great cause, the The Bear Search and Rescue Foundation. I attended the Service Dog Day on the Intrepid this weekend and it was a stirring site to see all these first responders and their dogs, knowing these guys were on the ground at 9/11 and that many of them had just returned from New Orleans.
CHARITY: Heartland Outdoorsman is running a Rods4Kids program. Right now they're focusing on kids of military personnel.

SOUTHWEST FLORIDA: Sight fishing for snook in Sanibel. (NYTimes log-in required.) Been meaning to post this since I read it at breakfast. I loved reading about snuke, one of my three favorite fish to catch under any circumstances, in the Gray Lady.

Fall Fishing Heats Up

Two straight days of fishing marked the beginning of fall patterns for me. I played guide both days. On Friday I took my brother and my Dad fishing and we ran over 100 miles in search of a bite, and finally got a few decent schoolie stripers to show for it. Yesterday, I played host to four anglers, and we stumbled upon a classic bluefish blitz. The blues were hammering peanut bunker at the start of the incoming tide. We saw some excellent sustained blitzes and chased the fish for three hours before the bite completely shut down. The blues were a little finicky because of all the bait in the water, but we got them to bite on small silver spoons and popping plugs. My future brother-in-law got some great photos of the action.

What's Up With the Western Long Island Sound?
It seems to be dead, literally. Dead adult menhaden are floating all over the place in the backs of the bays. Apparently, they're dying from lack of oxygen and overheated water. Last year at this time you could catch bluefish in your sleep, but this year they're hard to come by. I'm getting a little worried at this point. Hopefully things will improve in the coming weeks as the temperatures cool.

St. Lawrence Smallmouth

We had limited success with the smallmouth over Labor Day. We couldn't buy a bite on the fly so we changed tactics and targeted them 25-feet down with live groundpike. We got a few solid ones, the best being my brother's pictured here.

Labor Day Arrives
No more blogging until Tuesday, hopefully with pictures of big fat smallmouth bass. And time to get amped for the impending fall fishing run in the Northeast...
Katrina Relief Event in NYC

Kings of Canada

I had a great time salmon fishing in English Bay in Vancouver, BC, but didn't land a big king salmon as I'd hoped. I had a good guide who worked hard to get me on fish. We trolled with 9' medium action Ugly Sticks and single-action reels off downriggers. I caught quite a few kings, or Chinooks, but all were in the 3-5 pound range. A couple were "jacks"--fully matured males that grew up to be runts. My guide called them "Princes." They fought hard for their size. I also bagged one coho salmon, pictured, that I would have loved to eat had I not been jumping on a flight that afternoon. As I have an annual trip to British Columbia every August, I might make this an annual salmon adventure, too.
